Being a Black Woman in Power: Former Mayor Lovely Warren

Updated: Nov 12

In a time when our country had the chance to elect its first female President, many of us watched in hopeful anticipation—only to feel the familiar sting of rejection as the majority of Americans didn’t lend her their support.

For Black women, who have long been on the frontlines of activism, community-building, and leadership, this moment serves as both a personal and collective reminder of the challenges we still face in being recognized and supported for our vision and capabilities.

On today’s post-election episode of Grace & Grind Podcast, Dr. Pamala Brown-Grinion sits down with Lovely Warren, the former mayor of Rochester, New York, for a candid conversation about the journey of leadership, legacy, and resilience.

Lovely’s story as the first Black woman to be elected Mayor, holds lessons not only in leading with grace but also in understanding the importance of self-care and community in a world that doesn’t always see or support our potential.

Lovely’s advice to other Black women leaders is clear: protect your peace, build authentic relationships, and never lose sight of your personal priorities amid societal pressure.

Inspiring Leadership and Community Impact 💼🌆

Empowering a Community Through Visionary Leadership

Lovely Warren’s time as mayor left an indelible mark on Rochester. Her vision extended far beyond the cityscape; it was about uniting communities and driving strategic change. During her tenure, she led transformative initiatives like “Roc the Riverway” and the Inner Loop Redevelopment, projects aimed at revitalizing and connecting neighborhoods.

“You see this wonderful project that has brought people together,” she shared, capturing the essence of how her leadership inspired growth and unity.

But her focus wasn’t limited to development alone. Lovely was a fierce advocate for job creation, educational reform, and police reform—cornerstones of her community’s future. With every challenge she faced, Lovely stayed grounded in her faith.

“It is through God’s grace and God’s mercy that I’ve been able to do the work that I have been able to do in the community,”

Her faith and vision highlight what it takes to lead with integrity and purpose in a world that isn’t always welcoming.

Resilience in Leadership Amidst Personal Struggles 💪🏾💫

Turning Personal Challenges into Opportunities for Growth

Leading a city brings both triumphs and trials, and Lovely Warren’s story is one of immense resilience. When her journey as mayor came to an unexpected close, she took it as an opportunity to refocus on family, especially her daughter.

“I made a decision and made a choice,” she reflected. “I live with it every day, and I don’t have any regrets.”

Her choice to prioritize family in a time of personal struggle shows the difficult, often overlooked, balancing act Black women leaders face.

Lovely also spoke candidly about her personal encounter with the criminal justice system and how it deepened her empathy and understanding.

“I’ve had to deal with the criminal justice system personally, which has allowed me to grow as a person,” she said.

This experience shaped her as both a lawyer and a community advocate, empowering her to lead with vulnerability and speak openly on systemic issues—an approach that resonates with all of us striving to lead authentically.

Legacy and Influencing Future Generations 🌱✨

Balancing Leadership Responsibilities and Personal Legacy

For Lovely, legacy isn’t just about the big projects or policies; it’s about what we pass on to future generations and the relationships we nurture along the way. After stepping down, she made it a priority to be fully present for her daughter.

“Sometimes God sends you through some things so that you can recognize and realize what’s most important and focus on that,”

It’s a perspective many of us can relate to—success has to be anchored in what truly matters, or it risks becoming hollow. Lovely’s advice to other Black women leaders is clear: protect your peace, build authentic relationships, and never lose sight of your personal priorities amid societal pressure. Her story exemplifies that the legacy we leave behind is just as much about the lives we touch as it is about the achievements we garner.
